Battling “Chrome Dome”

Now you see you don't!

If you’re a man above the age of 20, chances are you or one of your buddies has a long-held fear of getting the ol’ “chrome dome”.  Male pattern baldness is passed down through genes but don’t rush to blame your father or grandpa for your lack of hair. I recently learned that women also carry the gene and pass it down to their sons (Source).  Weird huh? Continue reading Battling “Chrome Dome”

Best and Worst Athlete Hair?! (via posted a list of the Best and Worst Athlete Hair.  The list is relatively short and after a bit of review there is definitely something fishy going on there.

In my personal opinion, the list is all wrong.  I actually think that most of the athletes listed have had great and not so great looks.  Take a look at the Tom Brady picture…that’s the BEST athlete hair? And, Troy Polamalu has the WORST hair? Right…

Don’t get me wrong, there are some that I absolutely agree with…Ron Artest (excuse me, Metta World Peace) for instance, but otherwise it seems the list is more interested in reinforcing the status quo on what both men and women should look like.

What do you think?

Fro in the city: The Ginger Chronicles

I was walking around the city the other day, minding my own business, in what is widely known as a historically White, affluent area.  Think of it as the Jewish equivalent of Harlem.  So, I was be-bopping around as I usually do…headphones in, taking a moderate stroll in the middle of the day.  I walk up to a corner after crossing the road and I spot what appears to be a mom with her daughter who had long, fire-red hair.  Personally, I’m a fan of gingers…I mean, how can you not love Little Orphan Annie?

Isn't she cute?

They look like they’re embroiled in some big mommy/daughter debate as I walk by so I smirk to myself and keep it moving. But, just as I pass (like literally 6 inches from the girl) she whips her head around in some Exorcist/Willow Smith type action, stretches out her arm…and points at me…then laughs…hysterically.

Yep, that's more like it.

W-T-F?!  Now look, I understand that a young man with an afro isn’t really what you see everyday. I get my fair share of double-takes every now and then and I’ve pretty much accepted that.  However, I was not prepared for little Annie’s reaction to my mane.

Truth be told, after the initial shock of someone literally singling me out in public, I began to chuckle to myself.  Later, I thought…I wonder if she’s ever seen someone with an afro before?  I took it all in stride but might have said something to her mother had she not began to scold her.

Has anything like this happened to you?  Have you experienced a (public) negative reaction to your hair?

MANE MAN: Cornel West

This Harvard, Yale and Princeton educated man is a modern man who is well-known for his political beliefs as well as his classic fro.  Dr.West is widely known as an author, educator and media personality.  This brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  has written several books and even appeared in the Matrix films (who knew?).  His views on race relations and most recently, our economy, are sometimes considered controversial but West has the wit, attitude and intelligence to back it up.

Currently, Dr. West is working on a project called The Poverty Tour along with commentator/media personality Tavis Smiley.  The tour strives to raise awareness and improve opportunities for those living in poverty in the U.S.  Dr. West is a champion for equal rights and opportunities for all and is not afraid to speak his mind which in my book, makes him a modern-day hero.  Check out The Poverty Tour and his official website for more information.

Product Review: Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Moisturizing Conditioner

AOHR Moisturizing Conditioner

OK, I know what you’re thinking….Honeysuckle Rose?!  REALLY?!  Look, I hesitated to buy it myself but after reading so many good reviews online I just couldn’t resist.  And trust me, it’s just good enough to make you forget about all the flowers.  Plus it’s organic and that generally means good in my book.

As my hair has grown  I’ve realized how important it is to have a good conditioner.  Now, this stuff is a bit expensive (especially for the amount you get) BUT, this definitely is one product that the fro responds to.  I can’t really think of a time when my hair was so soft.  The only real downside to this product is the smell (and maybe if you’re embarrassed for it to be seen in your shower…got underneath the sink storage available?).

As you might have figured out, the conditioner has a strong floral scent because it features Honeysuckle and Rose Oils.  Personal note, no one has ever reported smelling the conditioner while in my hair so maybe that’s something you’d want to consider before purchasing.

I usually use this product as an addition to a cheaper, drugstore conditioner.  Lately I’ve been adding a little bit of this to the cheap conditioner before adding my styling product.  So, if organic products are important to you and you don’t mind a strong floral scent then by all means give it a try.  It’s definitely something I’ll treat myself to every so often because I don’t want to break the bank!  Check out the manufacturer, Aubrey Organics, online.
PS Aubrey Organics has a men’s line too but I’ll wait a while before I check that out.

Do you have a hair anthem?

Lately, I can’t get this song out of my head even though it’s been out for a little while.  LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem is definitely my favorite song at the moment, mainly because these guys have such great hair.  Well, that and the idea that me and some friends are gonna learn the dance sequence at 3:40 and kill it next time we’re out.  Check it out!
