Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set Review + A GIVEAWAY!

Every gent needs a good shaving system as some point in his life. I recall the days when I first started shaving and struggled with nicks, cuts and just using whatever the cheapest shaving products was out there. As the years have gone by, and I’ve been exposed to a wider variety of product choices, I’m glad that I’ve been able to try Van Der Hagen’s line up from time to time.

Shaving soap is something I’m still not all that familiar with, as I’ve mostly tried out gels and creams, however there is something to be said to using a tried and true method like the Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set.  It comes complete with a shaving brush and soap which is housed within a nice ceramic bowl.

After washing your face, and exfoliating which I recommend, you wet your shaving brush with warm water, lather up the soap in the included bowl and then brush your face in a gentle circular motion. This part is important, especially for gents with curly or coarse hair types. Applying shaving soap in a circular motion will help lift those stubborn hairs reducing irritation and nicks.  From there, you shave as normal.

The Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set is affordable at about $13.99, which means it works as gift for anyone, especially someone who may not have used a brush or shave soap before. It’s a great value.

My only qualm about the product is that, at times, the brush sheds a few hairs, which can trip you up at shaving time so be on the lookout for that. Otherwise, the set presents an affordable and quality option for gents looking forward to having a better shave without breaking the bank.

I’ve also teamed up with the folks at Van Der Hagen to bring you the opportunity to win a shaving set for Father’s Day! Enter in the widget below for your chance to win. Winners must be U.S. residents and one winner will be chosen one week from today, on June 5.  Good luck!

Product Review: Curve Black

“Cool. Sophisticated. Bold.” Does Curve Black live up to the hype? Read on for my review.

Curve Black is the latest creation of the team at Curve. Launching this month, Curve Black aims to offer the more sophisticated Curve aficionado another bit of depth to his cologne repertoire.

Curve Black claims to offer a distinctly masculine fragrance by combining fresh fougere with fresh florals and warm, woody accents. Sounds like a winning combination to me.

Fragrances are usually built with base, heart and top notes to create a dynamic and rich scent profile. This, in my personal opinion, is what allows for fragrances to work a little bit different for every person’s body chemistry. Certain “notes” will be expressed differently depending on person’s skin, body temperature, etc. It’s really interesting how that happens.

Here are the notes for Curve Black:

Top notes: Italian bergamot, violet leaf & nutmeg
Heart notes: Includes lavender, clary sage and tree moss
Base notes: Tonka bean, teak wood and sandalwood

In my experience, Curve Black lives up to its promise. There is most definitely a cool, sophisticated scent profile. I am particularly fond of the woodier base and heart notes. There is a sort of fresh finish, which feels distinctly on-brand for Curve, to me.

Fragrances are meant for difference occasions and while I really love Curve Black it may not be something that I would wear on an everyday commute to the office. It seems a bit more complex than that, but of course I guess that also depends on your personality, style and environment. It’s a little sexier, which means it’s perfect for drinks or date night, without a doubt. And as far as that packaging goes, I LOVE dark and deep colors so this one definitely offers a lot for me.

Would you give it a try? It could even make a great gift for a recent graduate or a happy Dad on Father’s Day which is coming up soon!

You may purchase Curve Black as most mass retailers in the states now. Eau de Toilette retails for $47 (2.5 fl. oz./ 75 ml.).

10 Manly Summer Hairstyles to Rock in 2017

Summer hairstyles for men have always been intriguing and interesting to make. There are a lot of easy haircuts that fit well on every man. The saying “life is too short to have a boring haircut” explains everything. Why have the same old haircut every summer, when there are a lot of interesting options from which you can choose the one that suits you the best?

Since the summer can get very hot, shorter styles are a must. Here is a list of our top 10 summer hairstyles for men.

Caesar cut

The Caesar cut is a short hairstyle and it is named by Julius Caesar who embodied this hairstyle.  In Caesar cut, the bangs are cut short in horizontal direction and hair is layered in 2-5 cm lengths all over. This hairstyle was more common in the 1990s among Western boys and men. Famous people that have had this hairstyle during the years are: Brian Littrell from Backstreet Boys, Eminem, Antonio Banderas, George Osborne, Jon Hensley, George Clooney, Gilbert Gottfried and many more.

Brushed up hairstyle

The brushed-up hairstyle does not originate from any famous person or iconic name like some of the other hairstyles here, but it is easy to do.  It suits many guys and can be combined with different messy or simple haircuts, depending on your choice. This hairstyle looks like it has been brushed straight up. The longer it is, the more effective look you’ll get.

High and tight hairstyle

The high and tight hairstyle is one of the easiest hairstyles for men because it can be maintained with very little complication. It is pretty common for military men to sport this style. It shows off the shape of the head and tends to keep you pretty cool in the summer heat.

Taper fade haircut

The taper fade cut is one of the trendiest and iconic haircuts. It offers a masculine look with a stylish, professional touch. There are different types of fades that can be combined with other haircuts, such as the temp, bald, skin or mid fade. You can also combine the taper fade with high top, Mohawk, curly hair or afro to get a more modern hairstyle.

Pompadour fade cut

The pompadour fade cut makes you stand out from the crowd & it is intended for people who want something completely different. It can be a perfect choice if you are looking for a easy and stylish summer haircut.

Quiff hairstyle

The quiff hairstyle is another iconic haircut that is intended specifically for men. It looks good on pretty much any length of hair. You can get the quiff hairstyle by combing the hair with a fine tooth comb to make the part. Apply some hair spray and add a little texture to give accent to the styling. Finally, blow your dry with a hair dryer to make it look more voluminous. When the hair is dried, comb it again to make sure your hair is perfectly in place.

Short curly hairstyle

The short curly hairstyle is perfect choice for the summer season and looks amazing on a variety of men. It gives a fresh, unique look. It is a great trend for men who want to make the hair look voluminous and full with a casual look.

Short messy hairstyle

This hairstyle is very easy to style and requires less maintenance. You can use some styling products like wax, hairspray or pomade to make it messy and more texturized. See how singer Zayn Malik wears his messy hairstyle with class.

Shaved Sides Hairstyles

This summer haircut features shaved sides with longer hair on top. It is very simple, but still looks amazing when you add some texture to the cropped hair on top. The hair is simply brushed forward with a comb to form this amazing shaved sides hairstyle.

The short Mohawk hairstyle

The mohawk is a very creative haircut and it stands out! If you style your hair this way, you’ll definitely be getting a lot of stares. It is little bit difficult to maintain but looks great with some effort. There are also a lot of styling options available for mohawk hairstyles.

What’s the deal with hair loss vitamins?

Balding and hair loss is one of the biggest causes of worry for men as we age. In past generations, hair loss has represented the change from sexually viable to unattractive, older and less virile. In recent years there has been a shift in attitudes, yet that doesn’t stop many men from worry about receding hair lines and balding, in general.

As such, hair transplants and other methods such as scalp treatments and massages have all emerged as helpful tools in our effort to beat, or at least slow down, the aging clock and hair loss.

Hair vitamins have also emerged with the promise of offering men help in this area. There are also a multitude of products aimed at women as well. Many of them contain biotin, which has been shown to help produce healthy and vibrant hair, skin, and nails.

I recently came across a product called iRestore, which has products that claim to reduce genetic hair loss by “thinning by inhibiting the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, which triggers the hair miniaturization process.”

Now I can’t vouch for this product as I haven’t used it myself, but it certainly represents an alternative to often expensive surgeries and other treatments that men seek out to combat hair loss. iRestore even has an entire hair loss system and laser (!) that claims to help stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss.

Could it be the missing link for many men’s battles with hair loss? If you’re interested, please visit iRestorelaser.com for more information and to purchase.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and I’m sure others would too!

Could magnets be the key to a better morning routine?

Most of us don’t like the process of getting ready in the morning, but what if there was some way to make the process a bit quicker AND easier?

What if your mobility was an issue?

MagnaReady was created by Maura Horton when she realized that her husband, diagnosed with Parkinson’s, needed help buttoning his shirt. In an effort to foster independence and autonomy for him and others with dexterity issues, she created MagnaReady.

Here’s what’s cool about MagnaReady shirts…they look just like any other shirt. The buttons, and shirt styles, look like any other popular shirt on the market. Decorative buttons line the outside to ensure that you always keep a neat personal appearance.

Here are some other key points about the shirts:

  • Wrinkle-free

Product Review: Shodai

Today, I share with you my thoughts on a new personal favorite, Shodai!

Hailing from Japan, Shodai skin care for men is an emerging, small-batch brand which makes use of some of Japan’s best local ingredients. The ingredients are cool, smooth and in my experience, work well for folks with sensitive skin. There are no harsh chemicals that leave your skin feeling rough or overly dry.  Read on for more of my thoughts!

Appearance wise, this is BY FAR the sexiest branding I’ve seen in a very long time. The minimalist color scheme reeks of elegance and sophistication. Every time I enter my bathroom there’s always a little bit of extra joy seeing these black bottles and tiny origami birds chirping to greet me.

The appearance is matched by what’s housed inside. When I initially received the product for review, I wasn’t convinced that a product with sake in it (SAKE FOR SKIN?!) would be the right thing for me. And I have to admit, the scent at first was just so unexpected. Perhaps, late night karaoke memories were triggered but that’s neither here nor there 🙂 Once I settled into the idea after about a day or two I realized that I really like the smell. It’s simple and not the overly fragrant stuff you’ll find in a lot of grooming products. For a gent like me, with sensitive skin, this is something I prize in skin care products.

Second only to the branding is the consistency and texture of  the face wash and moisturizer. They’re both pretty luscious and creamy, and not in a way that feels heavy. It’s odd, but they both strike a really good balance between thin and thick. And a little goes a long way for both, which is a good thing when you’re investing a few extra coins in your grooming products.

If you check out Shodai’s website you’ll learn even more about the products and what’s housed in this sexy little bottles. Some of the ingredients included are things like sake (as I mentioned), green tea (which is known to be great for skin) and hiba (something I’m less familiar with but has antibacterial properties).

That being said, I’ve been rationing out these little gems as I’ve grown fond of them.  You can learn more and purchase your own Shodai products at shodaimen.com.

Relationships in the Digital Age: Dating Ironies in Today’s World

The face of dating has changed dramatically over the last decade. There are quite a few reasons for this: from the rise of mobile interactive media such as Tinder and Badoo, to the fast pace of life and our inability to approach dating with patience.

The rise of the digital dating age seemed to be the next logical step for our technology-centric society. And sure, while this has given hermits and reclusive people a chance at reproduction, it has also transformed the dating terrain for large portions of the population that grew up learning to meet girls at clubs, work or any other example of real-life.

However, whether you like it or not, digital dating is here to stay and it is growing in popularity. So, to prepare yourself for engaging in the medium of romance with success and not awkward terror, here are some sheer ironies for you to watch out for when using online dating platforms.

Whatever happened to face value?

While good looks do help with getting a foot in the door when it comes to dating, they will only get you so far. We have been raised in a society that teaches us not to judge a book by its cover, a man by his hairline or a woman by her waist line; and while we all like to believe that we are a little less shallow than that, dating platforms have been set up, and are used in a way that is contrary to our positive self -image.

So why then, is a user’s image on a dating platform the most important piece of information you can get? Sure, you don’t want to be surprised by a hot date with a blonde donning a swastika tattoo on her forehead; but surely getting to know someone requires a little more than a few photos, a generic one-line description and a list of unimportant interests like ‘handbags’, ‘makeup’ and ‘sleeping’.

Now everyone is photoshopped

You would think that the shallow nature of online dating would give those who are aesthetically challenged quite the handicap in the dating world; though not necessarily.

If there is one thing that has always been true about digital dating, is that you rarely get what you see. But as photo-editing software and applications become more advanced and user-friendly, it’s getting harder and harder to tell who is who.

You can straighten your hair, lose a ton of weight or clear up your skin with a swipe of a finger on your phone; and everybody knows it. So why then, are images so important in the first place?

Though it’s not even the image manipulation that is the most misleading. On social media, you can be anyone you like. You can be a philanthropist, mountain climbing rock star with super-powers, a billion dollars and a doctorate. Okay, not quite, but you get the picture.

People don’t talk about who they are online, they talk about who they would like to be; or rather who they would like to be seen as. You do it, I do it, even your nan who just discovered Facebook does it. It’s human nature, but that doesn’t help when the super-model you’re supposed to be meeting up with for drinks turns out to be an oil-rig worker.

You think it may be separating us

Not all of the irony behind online dating is negative (although that might be a perspective thing). It is generally assumed that the use of digital media is separating us since it stops us from interacting in the real-world. This is a logical assumption, but oddly enough, in the land of online dating, it isn’t always true.

And what do we have to thank about that? Honestly, I think it might be ethics:

Designers of online dating platforms need to be careful not to encourage user behavior that is openly prejudice, for example. When filtering your searches on most dating platforms there are a number of options which are available, such as income and race.

In a world where we all struggle to build and navigate cross-cultural relations, dating apps put people in a position where they can meet people from different walks of life which traditional dating (being subject to social circles) would rarely allow.

So, who knows? Keep at it and you might actually shack up with a princess.

Not looking for hookups

Different users of online dating platforms have varying opinions on why they exist in the first place. They are widely believed by men to be a great place for one-night-stands and booty-calls, while more than a few of my female friends scour them for prospective long-term partners.

The varying opinions are easily settled though, by looking at how the majority of users interact with the medium; that is to say, it is mostly for flings, short term regrets and a shot at something which will likely fizzle if you’re lucky.

So why then, is everyone online so coy about it? Just about every profile on Tinder talks about anything but sex. If you want to get to know someone you need to actually meet them; so why scare prospective dates off by telling them they need to commit to you when all they have seen of you is a poorly photoshopped picture of you standing in front of someone else’s car?

Okay, fine, so it isn’t only for sex, and I’m sure that some lucky people have met their perfect matches by swiping right on their professionally edited face.

While reports on why people use apps like Tinder are varied, their CEO would like you to believe that 80% of their users are looking for long term relationships. I wonder how many of them actually find them.

Old Spice Hydro Wash Giveaway!

Disclosure: This content was sponsored by Old Spice, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

A few weeks ago, I shared my thoughts on the new Old Spice Hydro Wash. From there you might have gleaned that I’m a fan of the product. So much so that I have steadily been using these new washes for a couple months now.

Here’s the skinny on Old Spice Hydro Wash:

  • Hydro Wash offers superior hydration with over 20% hydro-moisturizing complex.
  • Features Old Spice’s proprietary “dual stream” formula, keeping moisturizers and cleansers separate so that the moisturizers don’t wash away with the lather before hydrating the skin.
  • Thicker and richer lather means less product down the drain, resulting in a better overall shower experience that leaves skin feeling hydrated and clean.
  • Debuts in NEW Steel Courage scent. Old Spice’s daring new scent is assertive yet laid-back, combining the energizing top notes of pineapple and warm rum with a mid-note of intoxicating clove, crisp pepper and sage. Hints of sandalwood and warm amber add a balanced finish. SO GOOD!

Today I’m happy to share with you that I’ve teamed up with Old Spice to host as giveaway of their Old Spice Hydro Wash “Power Shower” Pack!

In this pack you will get the following:

  • *New* Old Spice Hydro Wash – Combines ultra-superior hydration with Old Spice’s long-lasting, masculine scents. Guys, you’re smellcome. (Enjoy in new Steel Courage scent, plus popular scents Live Wire and Pure Sport Plus.)

The team over at Old Spice also sends some thoughts via Janine Miletic:

We’re proud to support guys on their journey to legendary freshness with the launch of new Old Spice Hydro Wash body wash,” said Janine Miletic, Old Spice Brand Director at Procter & Gamble. “This new shower innovation combines ultra-superior hydration with our long-lasting, masculine Old Spice scents. Product Review: Old Spice DUO

Disclosure: Product was provided for the purpose of this review. The opinions listed herein are my own.

What’s the one thing that could make showering a bit easier (aside from not having to do it all)?  Maybe DUO by Old Spice is the answer.

While I do tend to dive into the depths of men’s grooming, trying out various products and regimens, I have to tell you to that there’s nothing I love more than a product that solves a problem.  And when it comes to your skin, DUO does a pretty good job at that.

Here’s what’s so cool about it. DUO is a soap on a rope…but better. It’s a two-sided cleanser that houses soap on the inside. On one side of the sponge(?) you get the smooth, wash-cloth type feel and on the other you get a bonus exfoliating side which is helpful when you’re trying to get rid of dead skin (which I recommend regularly). Regular exfoliation, and by regular I mean a couple of times a week, keeps your skin healthy and looking at its best.  This is especially good for active gents or those who otherwise find themselves exposed to the elements.

The great thing about DUO is that it’s a magical combination of soap, wash-cloth AND an exfoliator. Hmm, maybe they should have named it trio?

Here’s what else I really loved about DUO, it claims to last for a month (30 days), which means that if you buy one a month you’re set for your shower needs for the month. In my trial with the product, I came pretty close (within days) to the 30 day mark so by all means DUO pretty much lives up to its name.

DUO is available at most drugstores and grocery stores and sells for around $9.99. Ivory and Olay all have their own varieties so everyone in the family can use something different and all have great skin.

I highly recommend this one folks!
