For as long as I can remember I’ve been a little obsessed with lip balms. Aside from my compulsive hand moisturizing, I would have to say that I always seem to have some lip moisturizer on deck. Dry lips are a big no-no! So without further adieu, here are my thoughts on Cuebalm!

I’ve been using the Cuebalm for about a week now and I really do love it. Compared to most lip balms, Cuebalm is stellar. It hits on the moisture front, and it manages to do so with only three ingredients (jojoba oil, beeswax, and vitamin E).

Cuebalm has a super smooth feel and a great unscented and natural flavor which, in my opinion, makes it ideal for both men and women. While I am partial to all things shea butter, I have to say using Cuebalm is nice for the more humid months as jojoba oil absorbs so well into your skin while shea based products tend to make me feel a little greasy.

The packaging itself is pretty standard for a lip product and fits easily in pretty much any pocket you’ve got on your person. Since I’ve been using it, I have applied the product about two to three times per day max as I feel like it lasts quite a while. And for those lipstick wearers, I’ve also heard that it works well as a primer too.

Overall, I really enjoy Cuebalm and it has jumped to the top of my lip balm rotation (cause who wants dry, cracking lips, anyway?!). At $2.99 a tube, it’s a pretty good value, especially for the quality of ingredients. On top of that, it really helped validate my stance that there really is no good reason not to be using simple and natural products as much as possible. Sometimes they don’t work as well as your “traditional” brands but Cuebalm definitely does a respectable job.

Product reviewed was provided courtesy of Simple Luxuries.

If you have read anything on this site before, you know how completely obsessed I am with trying and finding the best products to keep you looking and feeling great. On top of that, I love natural and organic products for their “clean-ness” and modest sensibility. Today, I am happy to write about my experience with Simple Luxuries Lotion Bar, Irish Tweed Scent.

I have to be very honest here, the thought of a bar of lotion baffled me when I was first introduced to this product, but now that I’ve used it I can say that it totally makes sense. Simple Luxuries managed to create a moisturizing bar with literally 3 ingredients…yep not 13, not 30….3 (Grapeseed oil, shea butter and beeswax)!

The product comes in a small twist up tub much like those little castor oil anti-friction sticks you get in the drug store. This makes it a pretty handy product to tote around in a messenger if you need it. Simple Luxuries crafted a scent specifically for men, Irish Tweed, and it smells pretty much like Irish Spring soap from back in the day (from what I can remember anyway). The definitively masculine scent is strong and the “lotion” absorbed into my skin pretty quickly which I assume is due to the properties of the grapeseed oil. It’s non-greasy, leaves no residue and applies easily in stick form.

Overall, I’ll be frank and say that using a bar as lotion definitely takes some getting used to. I can’t say I’m a full-fledged believer yet, however, the bar is great for quick fixes like dry or ashy elbows or hands. Let’s keep it real folks…it happens. Would you give it a try?

Head over to the Simple Luxuries shop to check it out their lotion bars, and many other cool things, for yourself!

Clear hair care has grown in popularity since its launch in 2012 and the folks over at Clear were kind enough to hook me up with their 2in1 Scalp Comfort Daily Shampoo & Conditioner for review. Read on for my surprising review on this novel, yet traditional, daily shampoo and conditioner.

For those of you familiar with MANE MAN, you know that I personally really love mostly natural or organic products. Because of that, I was a bit skeptical that I would find the 2in1 scalp comfort helpful at all. It turns out, it was better than I expected.

Much to my surprise, the 2in1 scalp comfort has a lot of what most natural-haired curlies look for…SLIP. Slip is that feeling when shampoo or conditioner easily glides through your hair, and this product has a surprising amount of it. Because it’s a 2in1, I began my detangling process while shampooing which definitely cut back on some of my time spent in the shower. The active ingredient Pyrithione Zinc (1%), helps ease dry scalp and theoretically also helps with psoriasis, but I haven’t been using it long enough to find any discernible difference over time. I will say that it does help with scalp itchiness, which trust me, is no easy feat for my often dry scalp.

Overall, it seems that Clear Men’s 2in1 Scalp Comfort is definitely a step above a good amount of drug store shampoos. It’s readily available which makes for easy access. For me, the ingredients list is not what I usually look for and at the moment, I’m not sure that I would make it a regular staple of mine. But, I’m admittedly pretty picky. My advice? Give it a shot yourself and let’s compare notes in the comments section below.

Here is a list of the product’s ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Dimethiconol, Fragrance (Parfum), Carbomer, Dimethicone, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, DMDM Hydantoin, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Stearic Acid, Citric Acid, Tallow Acid or Palmitic Acid, Zinc Sulfate, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Sodium Isethionate, Poloxamer 407, Laureth-23, Laureth-4, Tocopheryl Acetate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, PPG-9, PEG-9M, Panthenol, Lysine HCl, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Xanthan Gum, Methylisothiazo

Finding the right daily moisturizer is a difficult, if not, insurmountable task for a guy like me with sensitive, combination skin. In my quest for perfection, I recently had the opportunity to try out Lab Series skin care for men’s Pro LS All-In-One Face Treatment. Product for review was provided courtesy of Lab Series.

My skin is particularly prone to redness near my sinus areas which makes it difficult for me to find a daily moisturizer that soothes that irritation. While trying the treatment for the first few times, I was pleasantly surprised by the mattifying effect that it has (which means it dulled the shininess of my skin). At the same time, it moisturized the lower parts of my face and neck with a light, grease-less feel. This is particularly important for someone like me with oily skin in my t-zone (forehead and nose areas) but dry skin on my cheeks and neck (where shaving usually takes place).

The 1.7 ounce bottle was definitely smaller than I anticipated, but the pump nozzle is easy to use and doesn’t leak out too much product which sometimes leads to waste. I used between 3-4 pumps during my morning routine and the treatment held up even in the harsh, and ever-changing, NY weather.

Overall Impression: Lab Series’ All-In-One Face treatment for men is a quality buy at a mid-range price point (1.7 ounces for $29). By far my favorite part of my experience was the subtle mattifying effect which helped dull shine in my t-zone area which is prone to periodic mini-breakouts. This is what sets this daily moisturizing treatment apart among a plethora of competitors. It is smoothing, calming and moisturizing which is exactly what Lab Series promises. That being said, my one major criticism is that the product doesn’t seem to offer any SPF protection which is helpful for all skin types. This is a major miss for me. All in all, it’s a little pricey but definitely delivers. The Pro LS All-In-One Face Treatment has definitely made me personally want to give the entire Lab Series brand a try.

Products were provided courtesy of Somersets for the purpose of this review.

Application/Ease of Use: The shave oil can be used on both wet and dry shaves, whether electric or manual which makes it a pretty versatile shave oil. In order to get the most benefit, you need to apply a few drops of the oil to your hands and then distribute evenly on the area to be shaved. But it should be said that you might only get maximum benefit if you follow the instructions and let the oil absorb for at least 30 seconds. I found that not doing so doesn’t necessarily provide the best or smoothest shaving experience, so I strongly suggest you follow the directions on the label. That being said, there really is no other way to use it incorrectly, that is unless you end up touching your eye with a unwashed, oil-drenched hand. Menthol in the eye is never a good idea.

Scent: I really love the scent of the Somersets Original Shaving Oil. It’s actually one of my favorite things about it. It has a nostalgic sort of scent which reminds me of old school barbershops and old men way too past their prime trying to offer me the latest cut. But, hey I suppose that’s a good thing. It’s all natural and packed with good oils like lavender, rosemary, cinnamon and sandalwood just to name a few. The ingredient list alone makes it a super smart buy if you’re looking to move towards a more natural lifestyle.

Price: 35 ml of shave oil will run you about $15 while the smaller version, the 15 ml, will cost you around $7.

Overall Impression: After spending a few weeks with Somersets, all I can say is that this stuff sure packs a pretty big punch. I’ve been using the large bottle for a little while now and have barely used enough oil to break below the bottle of the neck. Now, that’s saying something considering I’ve used it with electric clippers for beard maintenance and wet shaves to keep my neck clear of straggly hairs. Paired with any shaving cream, the effect of the oil is still pretty evident and it helps deliver a good amount of glide which helps prevents nicks and cuts. I haven’t let this one fly completely solo yet, but its definitely on the list of things to do.

Shea Moisture has released a full line up of new hair care for men. Read on for my review!

Shea Moisture’s line up of hair care products for men.

Disclosure: The products listed were provided courtesy of Shea Moisture for the purpose of this review.

When I found out a few months ago that Shea Moisture was going to release a new hair care line for men, I almost lost my mind. I’ve been a huge fan of their body products and Shea Moisture has definitely gotten me through some brisk New York Winters. But, today is all about their hair care line for men and I’m very excited to share my thoughts and reactions with you. Read on!

Three Butters Utility Shampoo: I’m never one to put too much stock into shampoos as I often find that they strip my hair and sensitive scalp of my natural oils and leave me feeling dry. That being said, the Three Butters Shampoo does a really good job of balancing cleansing and moisturizing both. The shampoo is very creamy (and smells really nice I might add) and has a rich lather that doesn’t make you feel like you’re stripping you hair of anything. That has been my experience at least. To be honest, it also helps me start the detangling process as I think it has some good slip that helps my fingers battle through my thick mane of kinks and coils.

Three Butters Utility Gel Mousse: I found the gel mousse to be very effective at giving girl definition and major shine (not like greasy fried chicken shine, but just normal shine, ya know?). It also has the rich, earthy and masculine smell that the whole line up has which is a definite bonus. I don’t have any major negatives to note here except that the gel gave my hair a bit of a crunchy feeling but that’s probably due to my heavy hand in application as well as it being tailored to “wavy, curly hair”. That’s clearly not my hair type, but hey it was worth a shot. As far as a styler goes, I have to say that the Three Butters Styling Smoothie really stole my heart over this gel.

Three Butters Styling Smoothie: I like to call this one the man’s answer to Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie. This is, by far, one of the best hair products I have used since growing my fro. Seriously guys, I can not get enough. It’s rich and creamy but also has a light enough weight so that it doesn’t weigh your hair down. The Three Butters Styling Smoothie is, simply put, a miracle product! Whether I use it on dry hair to shape the fro on day two or use it on wet hair right out of the shower, this stuff performs well. It always gives me good curl definition and soft hair. It also smells manly enough so no need to worry about bright or sweet floral scents here. Also, let me take a moment to just read off the first five ingredients: “Deionized water, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Macadamia Seed Oil, and Mango Seed Butter”. After that, the barrage of stellar ingredients continues. If you don’t buy anything else from this line…TRY THIS!

Three Butters Styling Pomade: Rich in smell and texture, the styling pomade is a great shea based pomade to help me tame frizzies and revitalize a style after using something like the Three Butters Styling Smoothie the day before. It works fine on its own too, but I really prefer something that helps give me a bit of definition along with moisture and shine. This would be a great product for guys looking for all natural wave pomades at a reasonable price or someone looking to add nourishment and shine to their locs or twists. Did I mention it smells good!?

Three Butters Utility Scalp Conditioner: The line up also comes with a Utility Scalp Conditioner made for bald men. Clearly, I do not fall into the category (and don’t intend to) so I think I’m going to have to pass this one along to a friend pretty soon. But what I can tell you is that it smells pretty damn good too.

Overall Impression: I feel like I’ve been waiting a few years to say this, but I’m really glad that Shea Moisture finally developed a hair care line for men. Too often am I faced with the reality of products that 1) have not so stellar ingredients and 2) are made for women and make no qualms about the fact. I won’t front, women’s hair care products have given me a lot of good hair days and lots of comments, but at the same time it’s also nice to have a company recognize that men have specific hair care needs too. All in all, this entire line smells GREAT, looks GREAT, and is priced GREAT. I feel pretty good using this stuff and some of the line will definitely stay in my personal rotation.

Read on as I review the all natural deodorant Pitstick!

Disclosure: Product was provided courtesy of Pitstick for the purpose of this review.

5 ingredients. 5 ingredients! Have you ever heard of a deodorant with just 5 ingredients?! Well, now you have. Pitstik is an all natural deodorant crafted by Froasis based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The folks over at Froasis were kind enough to share their product with me so that I could bring you this review!

Scent: As a guy, there are plenty of deodorant or anti-perspirant products out there for us to choose from, however, they often contain carcinogens (potentially cancer-causing ingredients) and other ingredients such as parabens, silica and aluminum that have their own problems. Well, Pitstik has none of those and as a guy I also found the smell pretty pleasant and fresh, inoffensive and not overwhelming. In addition, the product is gender neutral and you can even mix in your favorite essential oils to create your own signature deodorant. How cool is that?!

Consistency: I like to think of Pitstik’s consistency as similar to a thick, shea butter based pomade. It’s a bit more gummy in texture but is easily spreadable. I will say that application is a bit unorthodox as you have to dig in with a few fingers to apply the product to your underams. Now, I’m not used to my hands touching my deodorant but after the initial weirdness of that wore off, I realized that Pitstick really is a good and effective product.

Price: A tin of Pitsik sells for $7.95 on Etsy here. According to instructions, one tin of Pitstik should last about 1-2 months depending on how much you use and how often you reapply.

Overall Impression: The more products I use, the more I am surprised by the creativity and diligence that smaller brands have in crafting good quality, natural products (shout out to the little guys!). So far I’ve had a really good experience using Pitstik and haven’t noticed any underarm odor when I use it. Keep in mind that this is a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant so you may not get wetness protection if you’re looking for that. But, if you’re looking to dig further in the “natural lifestyle” then Pitstik is definitely worth your time (and money). And you have the chance to try it…FOR FREE!

I’ve got an itch…a serious one and it’s driving me crazy! You see, every Winter I try to grow out my beard at least once. I don’t know what it is…maybe I have a hidden desire to be a lumberjack, who knows? What I do know is, my face itches like crazy!

Several of you out there may know what I’m talking about. If you do, you understand how annoying new stubble can be. If you’ve never grown a beard, beware! You’re likely to have a serious itch, especially for the first couple of days/a week.

But there is some good news! While there’s no one size fits all cure to the “beard itchies” as I call them, I’ve found three things that make me feel much better in the growing out phase:

1. Moisture, moisture, moisture. During the first couple of days of your grow out process you may want to consider being overzealous about keeping your mug nice and moisturized. It certainly has helped me a bit. Plus, you should be doing anyway, right?!

2. Exfoliation is key. Using a daily exfoliant, like my personal favorite Shea Moisture Argan Oil Scrub, will help with moisture as well as lifting up beard hairs, limiting tangles and knots which is especially crucial for guys with curlier hair textures.

3. Comb it. Everyday. Just like the mane on top of your head. You won’t regret it.

If you’re going to don a beard, prepare yourself for the discomfort that will come with your protruding stubble. Be smart and continue to moisturize diligently and exfoliate regularly to ease the discomfort. And if you have a thick or long beard, you may to even consider conditioning it. And yes, I’m totally serious.

Up until recently, I've been iffy (OK, it's still a little outside my comfort zone) about delving into the wonder that is a facial mask but I finally gave in. While shopping in Ricky's, I came across a small tube of Queen Helene's Mint Julep Masque and decided to give it a try. Read on for my review!

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque, this stuff is pretty messy!

With a $3 price tag, the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque fits almost any budget, especially if you’re hesitant to try a new product in the first place. I’ve used the masque now and overall I liked how it performed and you certainly can’t beat the cheap price tag.

The masque is designed to help “dry up acne pimples, rinse away blackheads and shrink enlarged pores”. To be honest, I can’t really vouch for any of that because I haven’t used the product regularly. What I can say is, it most certainly left my skin feeling baby smooth. I used the product directions to a t (seriously, I set a timer) and I really enjoyed how it made my skin feel afterwards. I can’t say that I’ve used any face product that left my skin feeling that smooth. On the other hand, the smoothness was relatively temporary. I’m not saying my face turned to stone the next day or anything, I just didn’t notice any lasting results. Perhaps regular use might get me longer lasting results.

The one thing that bugged me about the masque was the application. The product comes out of the tube in a semi-solid state and mystified me a bit. As you can see from the graphic above, I had a hard time evenly distributing the product due to its texture. It definitely got into my hair which was a little annoying to wash out after my 15 minutes was up.

Overall, I think that the masque is fine for what it is. A 2 ounce sample tube will run you about 3 bucks and that’s probably the most inexpensive masque you can get anywhere. While the treatment is refreshing and generally good for your skin, I can’t say that I noticed any real difference in the clarity or even-ness of my skin. If you’re a guy with problem skin, this may be a good product to add to a weekly regimen. That being said, this was the first mask I have ever used and I did feel a little bit like a housewife prepping for bed. But then again, I recovered with my machismo intact. I do have to say, the feeling of your skin tightening while the mask is on is REALLY weird, but sort of cool. So, just consider it an experiment, OK?

Product Review: Van Der Hagen Shave Set

Are you looking for a little old school charm in your shaving routine? If so, then Van Der Hagen's Shave Set might be for you. Read on for my review to see if the set passes the test!

You all know that I have had my run in with more than my share of grooming products so I can be a pretty discerning judge when it comes to all things shaving. First, let me give you the positives. At around $13 for the set, the Van Der Hagen system is a pretty good value considering you get the shave soap, a ceramic holder and boar brush with plastic stand (the stand can also hold your favorite razor). So, the value is definitely there. And I can’t say enough, how important it is for guys to make the switch from cheap $2 shave foams to at least a good utility type soap. While the soap does come with some unfortunate ingredients, it also packs shea, cocoa and mango butters which help deliver a bit of added moisture.

Now, let’s move on to the not so great parts. I love a good boar brush but I have to say this one just doesn’t hold up like some of the others I’ve used. At probably my second or third trial with the product, I began to lose a lot of bristles in every shave. Maybe even as much as 10 bristles on some occasions. Unfortunately, I just don’t think the brush is built to last. With regards to the soap itself, I felt like I could have gotten a lot more moisture to help limit irritation. The moisture level isn’t bad, per se, I just wanted more smoothness.

Overall, I think the Van Der Hagen set could be a good fit for a lot of guys out there. I think it’s a particularly good fit if you’re looking to gift yourself or a guy in your life with a step up from cheap, inexpensive shaving products. However, shaving vets will most certainly expect more, so my biggest feedback for this is that you should really know your audience. It’s not a bad value for what you get, but don’t expect to fall in love either.

Now that a few weeks have passed and I’m starting to grow back my goatee, I have had some time to reflect on my first year participating in Movember. To be honest, I was surprised by how off-balance I felt when my facial hair had gone away. Maybe facial hair isn’t just facial hair after all?

I started Movember 1st with a completely bare face and immediately felt that I had regressed a good 10-15 years. I turned into a bashful teenager again and found myself counting down the days until my stache made a come back. These days, I’m feeling a bit more like my usual self, but shaving off my stache and goatee taught me how facial hair, for guys, really is a symbol of adult/manhood. I remember being younger, looking at my father and thinking, what will I look like when I grow a moustache? Will I be cool then? Will I look “old”? It’s funny how big a difference a little razor blade and shaving cream can make.

The goatee is slowly making its way back (woo hoo!) and I’m starting to feel like a grown man again, thankfully. I have to say that Movember was an enlightening experience as it made me more conscious about health issues affecting men around the world. It also gave me impetus to continue to monitor my health as I get older as well the other guys in my life. So, I guess Movember serves it’s purpose after all, huh? Plus, the Mo Gala was pretty fun too!

Movember fundraises year round for men’s health issues and you can visit their U.S. page here for more information. Finally, check out this video from Movember CEO & Co-Founder Adam Garone as he wraps up another successful Movember campaign.

Disclosure: Products were provided courtesy of bump patrol for the purpose of this review.

Readily available with the hefty promise of visible results in 48 hours, bump patrol products are specifically geared towards men of color to combat razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to try out the brand for the first time so I thought I’d share my opinion with all of you. Read on!

Packaging: bump patrol products have an uncomplicated and straightforward brand design which I think most men would welcome to their medicine cabinets. The line design itself is universally blue and deep in color with clear and uncomplicated text that is easy to read. I found the directions easy to understand as well.

Consistency: For the purpose of the review, I want to focus on the Cool Shave Gel for Sensitive Skin and the bump patrol Sensitive Formula Aftershave. Note that bump patrol does have Original Formula and Maximum Strength Aftershave treatments available. The consistency of the shave gel is pretty standard of what you would expect of most over the counter shave gels. It lathers well and is really easy to use. The aftershave treatment has a creamy consistency that was thinner than I expected. In my trials with the product, I learned that I had to be mindful of only squeezing out the tiniest amount as the treatment really does go a long way.

Smell: As one would expect, bump patrol’s shaving gels have a pleasant and clean smell which is definitely something I look for in my grooming products. While the shaving gel scent is mild, the aftershave treatment is anything but. I would describe the treatment as potent, which makes sense given its medicated formula which is designed to reduce visibility of razor bumps in less than 48 hours. The treatment is not for the faint of heart, but the good news is that I find the scent dissipates relatively quickly after use.

Price: You can generally find the aftershave treatment for about $8.99 per a 2 ounce bottle. Their various shave gels retail for around $6 per bottle.

Overall Impression: I myself have struggled with razors bumps, off and on, at various points in my life and I must admit that bump patrol’s aftershave treatment absolutely delivers on its promise of visible results in 48 hours. The stinging sensation and scent are powerful, albeit brief, so first time users should keep that in mind. The shave gels left me wanting more slip and moisture for my daily shave as I now personally prefer oil or butter based shaving creams. Even with that, the aftershave offers great versatility and can be used by men and women on legs and heads. It is clear that bump patrol clearly has a formula that works for a lot of folks out there. If you’re looking for something to treat your bump-ridden skin then you should definitely give this product a shot.

Luckily for me, I still had some money left on my trusty gift card and headed over to Ricky’s to pick up the much buzzed about Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Pudding. Check out the full review below!

Packaging: Generally, I like Carol’s Daughter packaging and this was no exception. I did not find it overtly gaudy or feminine which is nice. The jar holds 6 ounces of product and is pretty easily handled. I have two (small) issues with the packing 1) the orange text that describes what the product does it terribly hard to read and 2) the jar is a bit wide to fit on the lip of my tub. Now, I know that’s not important to everyone but I have seriously limited bathroom space (that’s NY for you) so every centimeter goes a long way. All in all, pretty solid.

Consistency: With a name like “pudding” I was expecting a thick, luxurious, heavy cream styling product. Imagine my surprise when I opened the jar and got a medium weight, almost fluffy styling cream. I was concerned that the consistency wouldn’t be able to work its way into my mane, but surprisingly it worked well and was easy to apply. Generally I prefer thicker styling products but this ended up working just fine.

Smell: This is, without question, my least favorite part of the experience using this product. When I initially caught a whiff right out of the tub, I was pretty shocked by the artificial smell. Not that I’m incredibly familiar, but I’ve heard some other reviewers state that it smells like a hair relaxer which makes a lot of sense as to why I immediately thought of a hair salon when I first tried the product. The truth is, I hate the smell of this stuff but I’ve basically gotten use to it.

Price: At $22 a jar (for 6 ounces), this product is pretty pricey!

Overall Impression: Initially, I wasn’t too thrilled with the Hair Milk Pudding but I have to admit that it only grew on me with time. It definitely delivers on the style and define fronts but really misses the boat on the promise of offering hold. Unfortunately, I think there are as equally as good products on the market and for much less, no doubt. While the pudding offers some good benefits, I just can’t say that it’s worth the hefty price tag.
