Living in NYC is hard y’all. I mean sometimes you find yourself walking around and having to reply to your friends’ text messages at the same time. I kid, of course! But what if you actually had a “seeing eye person” who could lead you around safely while you sent texts to your heart’s content? It would probably be when the two “seeing eye” people cross each other’s paths in the cross walk and one has a line of like 7 people. Hilarious. Check it out!

I recently came across this video of Shaquille O’Neal in an advertisement for Dove Men Care in which he talks about growing up with an uncommon name (which I can relate to) and how he got a lot of strength from his mom (which I can also relate to lol). Motown Philly!

This past weekend I got the opportunity to hang out in Philadelphia a bit to visit with friends. I had loads of fun, but I did not appreciate that it was super cold and the wind was blowing like we had mistakenly boarded a train to Chicago. Side note, why do people in Philly not wear real coats? I know us NY’ers are notorious for our heavy coats and fancy scarves, but since when is it OK to wear a polo shirt in 20 degree weather?! Who knows…

Unfortunately, it was seriously too cold to take off my gloves to snap any cool pics but I had a pretty good time. On our way out of town on Sunday, we stopped by this highly regarded sandwich shop (apparently Bobby Flay likes it) called Tony Luke’s for cheese steaks. Last time I was in Philly I damn near starved to death and ended up with a cheese steak that did not even equal my childhood foray with Steak-Umms. Yeah, they make me cringe a little now too but hey, live and learn. Tony Luke’s was OK, but definitely not worthy of Flay’s endorsement in my opinion. That being said, dinner at Magianno’s the night before was pretty indulgent so I didn’t complain too much!

Taking a Look Back

Every New Year I think that it’s important to reflect on the past in order to look forward. With the new year comes some great new opportunities and I wanted to send my thanks and show you the one picture that started it all:

In the fall of 2009 I took this picture to my barber after letting my hair grow a few weeks past my normal hair cutting schedule. I reluctantly said, “I want my hair to look like this!” to which he replied, “You want a fro?” I guess I did! Lenny has always been a great style icon for me and while I don’t even come close to emulating his sense of style, the fro is definitely a step in that direction (along with a good pair of aviators sunglasses). Lenny + rock r&b styling + great writing and crazy guitar solos = the best. Here are some of my other favorite Lenny pics out there.

Season’s Greetings everyone! I’m officially in the Christmas spirit and my apartment has been full of Christmas scents and music for most of the past few days. Stockings are on the mantle and a few presents are hanging around and I’m feeling pretty good! Happy holidays whatever you celebrate (or choose not to celebrate) this time of year. I personally think no matter your religious or spiritual orientation, its most important to spend time with those who you love and cherish. Curly Nikki visits NYC!

This past Thursday NYC had the honor of hosting Ms. Curly Nikki herself! Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the Mizani sponsored event earlier in the evening but I had to check out the after party at Pranna Restaurant. I met a lot of wonderful (and incredibly smart) people and had a great time. It definitely was a great way to cap off a full work day. While it was too late for me to meet the incomparable Boogie and her incredibly popular boots, I got to chat with Nikki and even got a picture with her. She was warm and inviting and it was great to watch the natural community in action. With such great hair and great people around, it was damn near impossible to have a bad time.

I didn’t try the food at Pranna but the drinks were decent, although a bit pricey, but I heard more than a few folks praise the food. Check it out if you’re in the Murray Hill/Gramercy area and in the mood for a cool and sophisticated lounge. Thanks to Kisha (pictured far left) for sending the picture along!
