Instagrammers I Double Tap <3

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Scrolling through Instagram is one of my favorite, time-wasting activities. There is always a lot of visually stunning photos and good information to go around.

When “stories” first hit, I had to admit that I wasn’t sold on the idea. Fast forward to now as I often find myself re-watching certain stories over and over again. It’s shameless, really.

Here are some of my favorite ‘grammers that you might want to check out.

@myleik: Myleik is a business person, inspiration-maven and a go-getter. I’ve long been a fan of her work and business (Curl Box). There’s plenty to admire. But with her newest venture My Taught You, Myleik delves deep into inspiration, personal and business growth. You’ll often find inspiring or thoughtful quotes on her page. And her stories are also pretty good at giving you a sneak peek of her home life, day-to-day boss status and RECIPES. She also has a podcast that is well worth a listen (yours truly was also a guest!).

@prestonkonrad: I’ve always been a fan of style but not the super avant-garde stuff. Give me a classic and straightforward look any time. That’s why I’m so used to double-tapping Preston Konrad’s account. I first came across Preston on his TLC show Style by Jury, which was essentially my new updated What Not to Wear. I was sad when that show ended and was all too happy to discover Preston’s fashion-centered Instagram account. I ran into Preston at an event a few months ago and awkwardly introduced myself to him. He’s stylish and gracious in person, which isn’t something you always encounter in the style industry. If you need some fashion inspiration, he could be your new go-to guy.

@skinnywashere: This guy works hard, travels a lot and parties hard too! If you’re looking for a good time with pictures of some pretty attractive people and gorgeous locations, then you should be following Skinny. He’s a talented photographer and seems to have a whole lot of fun too!

@_jamesthor: Me and James go way back to my days in NC. We’ve both relocated since those college days and I’m incredibly proud to see the work that he’s been doing. His photos of some of the most beautiful people is always inspired and interesting to view.

@becauseofthem: Let’s be honest, these days we all need an extra dose of inspiration, don’t we? Because of Them We Can is one of my favorite Instagram accounts for that reason. The posts drip with pride in the Black experience and it’s always so wonderful to see young kids embody some of the greatest figures in Black American history. Not only are the pictures often adorable, they’re also educational which is saying a lot for a platform mostly used to show pretty faces and bodies (not that there is anything wrong with that…see above!).

@humansofny: If you’re not a New Yorker you may not know about this one. Brandon Stanton, the man behind Humans of New York, is not only a photographer but a storyteller. His series of posts highlighting NYers (and people he meets on his travels) is at all times riveting. It’s occasionally exciting, romantic, and at times heartbreaking. It’s hard to mindlessly scroll through Instagram when you have something so special in your feed. Follow this account. I promise you won’t regret it.

And a special shout out to Victoria of Victoria McGinley Studio for the inspiration for this post!

Weekly Obsessions 2/21/17 Edition

Hi all! It’s been a while since I’ve done a weekly obsessions post so I thought it was about time to share some of what’s been occupying my mind lately.

For those of you interested in the #RESIST movement, filmmaker Michael Moore has created a new site called The Resistance Calendar, where you can keep up with political events and movements against, fascism, racism, homophobia, etc. You can even submit events to be added to the calendar yourself.

Speaking of events, upcoming this Friday is a Naturally Curly sponsored event hosted by activist and icon Michaela Angela Davis and everyone’s favorite activist/actor/comedian/blogger extraordinaire Franchesca Ramsey.  Tickets for the event are available at Harlem Stage.

Also, I know I’m late on the Girl Scout cookie wagon but I just got a chance to watch this video and it is HILARIOUS.

Also, SheaMoisture is currently running a Buy 2, Get 1 sale at Sally’s Beauty both in store and online. It’s time to replenish your stash!

Here’s to a good rest of the week!

What are your favorite holiday movies?

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Christmas and the  holiday season overall I don’t know there’s just something about this time of year that people to slow down, take stock of things and generally take care of one another. Call it Christmas magic of whatever you want, but I really dig it.

This year has been strange though, for some reason it’s taken me a bit longer to get into the full mood of the season. I visited some holiday markets in NYC last weekend and just watched White Christmas (for the first time!) all the way through last night. I liked it. But then again I’m a fan of crooners and old-fashioned things (blame Mom).

So I need a little bit of help. What holiday movies help you get in the spirit? What are your favorites ones to watch?

Here are some of my personal favorites:

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (probably the reason I fell in love with the Big Apple to be honest)

The Nightmare Before Christmas (works for both Halloween and Christmas, right?!)

Elf, one of Will Ferrel’s best!

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas…THE classic!

Solange Reaches the Top on Billboard

There’s always a healthy, and sometimes, unhealthy amount of competition between siblings in everyday life. There is certainly no exception when it comes to celebrity siblings.  Now Solange and Beyoncé are entering into new celebrity-sibling territory as Solange’s latest album A Seat at the Table reaches the number 1 spot on Billboard. Congrats Solange! With this achievement, Solange and Beyoncé become the only sisters in Billboard history to have reached the #1 spot…and they did it in the same year!

Everyone’s little sister, Solange, has had her share of success over the years. She’s released several albums since she left her days of helping write and dance for Destiny’s Child.

Billboard charts these days aren’t only about album sales. They also take into account streaming and digital purchases. This, I think, follows the trend of music but also levels the playing field for artists who wouldn’t typically get the kind of shine or PR (public relations) push that artists like Beyoncé or Britney Spears might get, for example.

Not one to shy away from using her voice, in her latest effort, Solange’s latest is personal and politically charged but maybe not in the way that you might expect. From what I’ve heard so far (which is only two tracks), she is in perfectly pure, unforced Solange form.  If you’re looking for a big pop belter Solange isn’t your girl and never has been. This, I think, only adds to her the dynamics of her talent and makes her incredibly unique. The dimension of movement in the album’s first videos and the space in which her natural voice exists make for a really enjoyable musical experience.  Simply put, she’s dope.

3 Reasons Luke Cage Should be Your Next Binge-worthy TV Adventure

On September 30, Netflix presented its newest Marvel offering, the much-anticipated Luke Cage. It’s the show you should be watching!

Metro black culture is put front and center

One of the coolest things about new Netflix show Luke Cage is that it so boldly celebrates Harlem, NYC and the black experience that we don’t see too often on mainstream television.  Filming was completed in New York City so residents of the concrete jungle will find a lot of familiar sights in the series. In addition, soul, r&b and hip hop music play a big part in series. If the conversations among my friends are any indication, I think that a soundtrack to the series would be highly desired.   If you have love for any of these things, it’s hard to imagine that you wouldn’t appreciate what Luke Cage brings to the table. The show also features an overwhelmingly Black cast which is something we don’t often get to witness.

It’s so popular it crashed Netflix streaming in at least 3 countries

The premier of Luke Cage has been highly anticipated. Most of us (who aren’t die-hard comic book fans) first got a glimpse of Luke in Netflix’s AKA Jessica Jones series starring Krysten Ritter.  As fans marveled at Daredevil, then AKA Jessica Jones, our appetites were not so subtly anticipating the arrival of Luke Cage. So much so apparently many of us started streaming it at the same time!  There are reports that streaming was interrupted in the US, UK and Ireland as everyone took time to start the binge-worthy series upon its release. Given its popularity, there’s something to be said for just giving the show a try.

You get to reconnect with some familiar faces

Not only do you get to enjoy Mike Colter as the virtually indestructible Luke Cage, but there are also some other familiar faces (and new ones too) that will help you commit to the series.  Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, the show’s main villain is a face familiar to many Netflix aficionados.  He’s most recognizable as the character Remy from that other hit Netflix show, House of Cards.  In tow, as Cottonmouth’s inspired but misguided business partner of sorts, is the incomparable Alfre Woodard who seems to deliver each line with conviction even though she initially seems much shadier than she’s letting on.  Sons of Anarchy fans will also appreciate the appearance of Theo Rossi who was known as Juice in the series.

Luke Cage is streaming on Netflix now. You can check out the trailer below for a pre-binge sneak peek:

Sunday Funday with the Boys!

There’s only so much time left to enjoy summer. As the season starts to wind down many of us are making sure to get in some much-needed vacation time. I know I am!

Many of us will be spending the last of our summer days with friends and family. If you’re hanging out with your boys you’re definitely going to need some extra gear to make the last days of summer feel special.  After all, summer parties are where some of the best memories are made.  Well, you’re in luck! I’ve got some picks that you might want to consider for the next time you’re hanging around the pool or backyard in your down time.

For your next Sunday Funday you’re going to need the right supplies. Games, booze and music all make for a really good time. If you’re hosting, here are some of the coolest products that you can buy to help create that extra special hang out.

You can build your very own collection of items at Blueprint Registry, who was kind enough to supply the images for this post.

People use hairspray for what?!

Good morning all! It’s been a little while since I did a weekly obsessions post so I thought I would bring it back because the things that I’ve been obsessing over this week are too good to not share with you.

If you need a little break from #Elections2016 or the #Stanford sexual assault case you might find some solace in these cool and otherwise lighthearted obsessions this week.

First up, is this hilarious video of a mother talking about how she’s upset with Black folks for hiding the butters. WHO FINALLY TOLD HER?! 😉  I feel very strongly about my shea butter for pretty everything and it seems like this woman now does too.. Enjoy!

For those of you who are looking to keep your beard looking amazing just like friend-in-my-head rapper CivilJustus, you may want to check out this beard care regimen from Birchbox. It’s fantastic and has some product recommendations for you to try as well. Unfortunately, I can’t classify myself as a part of the #beardgang because I never grow out my facial hair quite that much, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a well-groomed one.  Also, the first beard oil I ever tried smells amazing and I would highly recommend it. You can find my review of Corktown Beard Oil here.

One of my favorite finds over the past week has to be People Keep Mistaking African-Caribbean Hairspray for Cooking Oil via Buzzfeed. This will never not be funny.

Also, I’m not too often about that petty life but this is just too funny.

And finally, Father’s Day is getting close! If you’re looking for some ideas to consider for pops, check out 19 Incredible Gifts for Dad on Father’s Day (plus a bonus option!).

WatchCut delivers 100 Years of Men’s Beauty

It’s not too often that we get a retrospective on men’s style  and beauty so you can imagine my excitement when WatchCut video debuted their videos about 100 years of men’s beauty!

In the two clips you see two different models take you through the last century of men’s hairstyles. It’s fascinating to see the ways in which men’s style has changed over the decades and how some styles look pretty similar to others. As they say, style always comes back around right?

My personal favorite decades for Lester are the 70s (look at that fro)! That man has an awesome head of hair! The 90s and 2010s were also a good look for me (sorry 2000s, cornrows just never were my thing).

In the video below, you can see model Samuel’s style change over the years. Ironically, I like the styles in the 70s and 2010s the most here too.  Clearly I was born in the wrong decade.  Anyone else notice how longer hair has been trending for White guys for some time now? Interesting stuff!

Which decades are your personal favorites?

Summer Skin Care Tips for Men

Although I haven’t been posting a lot of beach pictures lately, know that I’ve definitely been getting in some serious hours in the sun. I’ve been baking away and hoping that I’m not doing myself too much damage while basking in the daylight.  After a particularly hot (and SUNNY!) day I couldn’t help but think about the ways in which I was going to have repair some of the damage done to my skin.

I’m a BIG fan of sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen  daily (and not just on the beach) is one of the best things you can do to prevent skin damage. It’s the best preventative measure aside from just staying inside all day, and most of us don’t want to do that.  For the past few years now, I’ve tried to using a daily facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 so that I get daily protection against the suns rays. Sure, black don’t crack but I don’t want creasing either!

For long days at the beach I usually forego the daily moisturizer and instead rely on some real heavy-duty sun block to keep my face and whole body safer.  I usually use at least SPF 30 with broad spectrum (UVA & UVB protection).  Sometimes, I even use SPF 50.  Hey, I’m not taking any chances!

In addition to that, I’ve found this great over-the-counter clear zinc oxide that I use on my nose and cheeks to help prevent even further sun damage as I’m already prone to redness and irritation in those areas. It works pretty well and I never end up looking funny so it works.

In addition to skin protectants, don’t let yourself get dehydrated. Drink plenty of H2O, especially if spirits are a part of your festivities and don’t forget to seek out some shade underneath some trees or a beach umbrella every so often. Give your skin the break it needs. Your future 65-year-old self will thank you!

Weekend Musings

Happy Saturday folks!  Have you ever had one of those weeks where you just felt like you couldn’t get things going.  That’s been this past week for me.  Whether its complete laziness or a general lack of energy…this week has been a struggle!

Not to worry though, I will be back next week with some good news and reviews for you to check out.  Until then, enjoy your weekend! I know I’ll be taking mine very seriously and getting some extra r&r.  I hope you do too.  Here’s a little fun to get you through, check out @BeyonceonBeat on Twitter for a collection of Bey’s best remixed moments.

See you next week!
