In his latest Between Two Ferns, comedian Zach Galifianakis takes on Fury star, and one of my personal favorites, Brad Pitt. The video does drag in a few spots but that last half is hilarious. I just have two words for you…CHEWING GUM. You can view the video at this link.
As a (former) band geek, I’m seriously obsessed by this video of a New Orleans street performer who goes in on this song. Her voice is awesome and her clarinet skills are just incredible. Check it out below!
Now to the cute stuff, because you know…why not?! I’m a fan of pit bulls (largely because they get a bad rap mainly because of irresponsible owners, but that’s neither here nor there) and this video of a rescue is pretty awesome to watch.
Hey all! Here’s what’s been on my radar this week!
The internet recently exploded when a little guy in patterned pants stole the show on recent newscast. And best of all, it all happened on live TV. Way to seize the moment kid. Also, I love the girl who’s next to him staring…her face is PRICELESS. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re welcome 🙂
We made it! We’ve finally reached the end of another work week and it’s officially time for my latest Weekly Obsessions. Enjoy!
Check out Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba (aka “Crazy Eyes”) in this vid by Funny or Die as she auditions for other roles. It’s priceless and laugh out loud funny:
Somehow PSY seems to toe the line of musician and annoying over-grown goofy man child pretty well and his latest video for “Hangover” featuring Snoop Lion Dogg is no exception. The music and production is actually awesome but the video…yeah, I’ll leave it up to you to decide…
This final post isn’t an obsession per se, but it’s definitely something that I’d like to share and bring into our collective consciousness. Millions of people are trafficked around the world each year and many of them are children who are then forced into dangerous, degrading and dirty jobs. That includes everything from working in mines to being sold or coerced into sex slavery. It’s a serious problem that not many people know exists. Check out this video from World Vision’s No Child for Sale campaign to see how you can help, sign a petition and learn to buy goods responsibly. This definitely helped open my eyes.
Dancer. Laureate. Author. Poet. All of which are words that at some time were used to describe the incomparable presence Maya Angelou. Yesterday, one of the most important voices of the 20th century died in her home in Winston Salem, NC.
I honestly can’t say that I’ve read many of Maya Angelou’s long works but I have definitely even exposed to her poetry over the years. But after revisiting her legacy over the past 23 hours, I can say that her cultural and political commentary in interviews is as noteworthy if not more important work than her written passages. I say this to acknowledge the incredible fervor, honesty and courage with which Angelou speaks. Personally, I’m excited that we have both written works and video interviews of Angelou so that we can marvel at her greatness for generations to come. Some of my favorite interviews and clips of the revolutionary Maya Angelou are below.
Maya Angelou talks with Linda Wolf about overcoming challenges and her hope for a better world [LINK].
Here Angelou talks with Jon Snow about her speech at Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.
And finally (one of my personal favorites) Maya Angelou takes on the Silver Fox himself, Anderson Cooper on CNN. A great interview on the state of the United States’ race relations and modern civil rights issues.
Since last month, the sports world has been reeling from the whole Donald Sterling fiasco. Unfortunately, he keeps putting his foot in his mouth but I don’t feel bad for him at all. What I’ve found really interesting is how recently Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tried to add some nuance to the race conversation by acknowledging his own prejudices. While honest his comments were, as Don Lemon said, “inartful”. Personally, while messy in spots, I think Cuban’s comments are a welcome addition to the conversation because its honest and I’m interested to see how the sports world continues to respond to race issues in the NBA.
Now it’s time for a little bit of a dance break. Check out this video of Keone and Merial Madrid as they hit the dance floor. It’s definitely worth a watch.
Finally, check out this clip of Will Ferrell taking on doppelgänger and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith in a hilarious “drum-off”. Watch until the end, it’s pretty cool.
As Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April) comes to a close, the White House took what I like to think is a monumental step forward to honor victims and survivors of sexual assault by launching a new campaign titled 1 is 2 Many.
The initiative has just released a new PSA featuring some of the most recognizable male faces in Hollywood (such as Dulé Hill, Benicio del Toro, Daniel Craig, Steve Carrell and Seth Meyers) which I think is a great indication of the movement’s efforts to get men involved in the prevention of gender based violence. The short spot also features Mr. President, Barack Obama, and VP Joe Biden as well.
Spearheaded by VP Joe Biden, the initiative very pointedly addresses the topic of sexual violence against women while also noting that there are many male survivors out there as well. So often, many of us don’t understand what we can do to address such a large, all-encompassing issue; here’s what 1 is 2 Many has to say about that:
“How Everyone Can Get Involved
Support all survivors regardless of their gender or identity. Listen to their stories without judging or blaming. Offer to go with them to seek resources and services if they want them.
Speak up if you hear comments that promote violence against women. Be aware of language that you use that degrades women and survivors of other identities. Don’t be afraid to be an active bystander and intervene if you believe violence is occurring and it is safe for you to do so.
Be a role model for healthy relationships. Always treat others with respect and expect the same from others. Mentor and teach younger people to also act as role models.
Join an organization that is working to end dating violence and sexual assault. Don’t have one in your community? Start one!”
It’s great that the Obama administration has decided to take a stand on an issue that has affected so many of us (whether directly or indirectly) and this move bolsters his determination to prevent unnecessary and brutal violence against women. Coming off the heels of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act of 2013, I hope that we all can recognize that the U.S.’ highest office is trying to prioritize women and social issues that affect all of us no matter our political affiliations.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought to yourself, “I wish I had more facial hair?” Well, if you can’t grow it naturally, then I have some good news. Now, you can buy it.
Facial hair implants are a new cosmetic procedure offered for men who are, let’s say, a little facially hair challenged. For guys who have facial hair that is thinning or grows in patches, facial hair implants might be a permanent solution to an itching problem.
If you’re looking for an intense, hipster-style beard, your implant procedure could cost up to $8500. The procedures can range from partial implants to help piece meal beards come together while others can be full on facial hair constructions for those starting from nothing. The process usually involves removing hair from a fuzzier area (such as the back) and transplanting it onto the face.
We all know that hipster culture has made facial hair even more in vogue as of late, but I wonder what will happen when the facial hair tides turn again and bare faces are again the norm. I wonder if those with implants will regret the once pricey investment.
Most of us aren’t huge fans of air travel so when something especially good happens on a flight (extra leg room, extra snacks, pretty much extra anything) it’s definitely a good thing. Now imagine that you take your seat and are about to hear the dreaded safety instructions (man, safety can be so dry!) but instead of some robotic voice over the intercom you basically get an abbreviated stand up routine in the mix. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, it turns out some lucky passengers on a recent Southwest Airlines flight to Salt Lake City got more than their money’s worth when a flight attendant with good comedic timing gave the best safety speech ever. Check it out!
Pharrell has hit it pretty big with this song “Happy”. He’s performed at the Oscars and had pretty much everyone in the world dance to his song so this video of him reacting to fan videos is awesome. Not to mention it’s great to see an honestly display of emotion from a gent in such a mainstream forum too.
“That is the most non appealing advertisement I’ve ever seen.” Yep, that pretty much sums up my next weekly obsession. This viral video comes to you by way of TheFineBros You Tube channel in their video titled “You Tubers react to Little Baby’s Ice Cream”. The advertisement itself is bizarre, creepy and unappetizing but interesting nonetheless. The reactions of the You Tubers are pretty priceless though.
So there were quite a few things that caught my eye this week. Check out my latest obsessions below!
First off, there’s very little in life more annoying disappointing than “news” programs sensationalizing stories for ratings. That’s why I was happy to come across anchor Mika Brzezinski addressing the issue of sensationalism on-camera with her co-host who appeared to be doing it at the time when referencing Malaysian flight 370. Unfortunately, the guy shows how incredibly immature and patronizing he is by trying to talk over Mira with a “nana boo boo” type attitude.
If you’re outside of the NY/NJ area then you’ve most likely not had the great pleasure to hear (or see) about the Staten Island clown, which is probably the creepiest advertisement?/prank/hoax that I’ve seen in a while. Comedian Vic Dibitetto (Vic DiBiTetto on YouTube) ran into the #SIclown recently and here’s what happened. The language is NSFW.
Finally, my last obsession gives you the opportunity to provide clean drinking water for a child in need. All you have to do is leave your phone alone for 10 minutes! Visit UNICEFTAPPROJECT.ORG to get started. For every ten minutes you don’t touch your phone UNICEF gives a child one day of clean drinking water. How long can you go without touching your phone? I gave it a shot earlier today and was rewarded with confirmation of my good deed:
