I recently came across this video of Shaquille O’Neal in an advertisement for Dove Men Care in which he talks about growing up with an uncommon name (which I can relate to) and how he got a lot of strength from his mom (which I can also relate to lol). It’s short & sweet and well worth a 30 second watch…check it out!
Love that! My boys need to see this. Our boys have pretty basic names but having Caucasian parents while they are African American has required them to know who they are and what they stand for. They have come across much ignorance in their short lives. Anything we mama’s can do to build up our boys will help them become confident young men…’cause this mama is raising MEN not boys!
Good for you! I, too, ran into a lot of ignorance when I was younger (my father is a light skinned Puerto Rican) so in my humble opinion, is good to start those race discussions early. And building confidence is definitely key!
