It looks like guys now-a-days are looking back to samurai culture for hair tips. Yesterday, in an article titled Spare a Hair Band? A Man Bun to Go, the New York Times reported that a new trend of the “Man Bun” is emerging. It looks to me that the style is reminiscent of the historical “topknot” hairstyle worn by samurai warriors.
I’ve actually seen this style worn before by rock stars and athletes but now it seems that everyday guys are adopting the “Man Bun” as an easy go-to style. It’s worth mentioning that I haven’t seen any curly or kinky-haired dudes rocking the “Man Bun”…well not yet at least. For more on the trend, check out this article from Gothamist.
What do you think? Yay or nay?

Hmmm interesting topic. As far as kinky hair guys go I’ve only seen the bun on dudes with locs and it looks good. I do think you have to have a certain something-something to pull it off.
I think that it’s kind of stupid that we have to call it a “man-bun”. It’s just a bun.
It’ not that big of a deal.
I think it’s kind of sexist that if men start to do things that are normally considered “womanly” like caring for our hair, it has to be appropriated to be suitable for men.
Hair is genderless.
Unless the hairstyle is being used to signify some sort of status, why do we have to assign a gender to our hair and what we do with it?
I’m a guy, and when my hair get’s long enough to put into a bun, I’m not going to be worrying about people thinking I’m less of a man just because I don’t put the “man-” qualifier before everything.
I agree with you on a lot of your points actually. I find it silly that our culture qualifies things in this way. I think everyone should style themselves the way they feel the most comfortable so if you want to rock a bun, DO IT!
That’s a nay from me! LOL!! I mean, I think you have to do whatever makes you feel comfortable … but I personally am not feeling the little samurai bun on dudes. LOL!!
